This is a quick overview of our hike in El Cubano Park, outside of Trinidad. It was a self-guided day hike to a number of swimming holes. This post provides logistical details and facts as well as links to a videos. This is a tourist experience on a shoestring (think tiny budget).
We started the next leg of our trip with a ride to Trinidad. Two options, local truck or tourist bus. Once in Trinidad we scouted the beaches and restaurants before heading out for a hike in the El Cubano National Park (located within the NP Topes de Collantes). The beach had beautiful scenery but ultimately, so did this little park full of swimming holes. Green water, waterfalls, caves, walking paths and naturally a restaurant for the tourists. Difficulty Level:
The park is a short walk from the town of Trinidad (we opted to take a horse taxi to the dirt road leading to the park) but a shared taxi to the park entrance would be a better option. On our return we hitchhiked and got a ride with a couple who had hired a private taxi.
There is no actual entrance fee for the park in general. But once we reached the popular swimming hole (at the waterfalls) there was a guy there to collect a $9 fee. A fee that was well worth it. The previous free swimming spots were lovely, but the waterfalls pool was outstanding.
Parque El Cubano
This site is the closest to Trinidad. According to the map, this site has a waterfall, swimming, camping, birdwatching, horseback riding, and a restaurant. A trail goes to the Mirador de Caribe, which is on the road to Topos de Collantes.

Expect to spend the following per day: Room $25 (double occupancy & breakfast included), $5 lunch, $10 dinner, $10 drinks & misc ($50/day). Plus transportation and other package tourist items. This is the minimum and requires some bargaining and discipline.
