Game Haven Wildlife Ride, Blantyre, Malawi

This is a lazy half-day outdoor luxury adventure at the Game Haven Lodge, just outside the town of Limbe (Blantyre). It’s a well know overland stopping point but also an expat weekend family favorite hangout.

Game Haven Wildlife Ride Details

Located just 15km south of Limbe, off the M2 (on T417), this is a drop of luxury mixed with African wildlife for a modest price. The lodge has all the expected amenities of a luxury lodge (pool, bar, restaurant, open areas, children’s play area and a golf course which may have these equipment) plus a mix of 10 lazy herbivores (ranging from wildebeest to giraffes) to observe in the wild. All this is a stone’s throw from civilization and the masses as evidenced by the cultivated fields on the other side of the electric game fence and the sound of mating wildebeest mixed with domestic cows in the air.

I visited with a small group of friends and we headed in different directions once in the main building. One went to spent the afternoon at the bar, another at the pool and the remainder rented mountain bikes for a guided wildlife tour of the grounds (rather than the available game drive or walk options). The hills and winding trails (and the across the golf course) route taxed the old bikes and my old muscles at times, but it was certainly worth the 10,000 Mk for the tour.

As someone who loves a good challenge, I was thrilled to hear that the hotel also offered an escape room experience. After dinner, my friends and I made our way to the designated location and were quickly briefed on the scenario we would be facing. We were locked in a room and had one hour to solve a series of puzzles and clues to escape. The pressure was on, but we worked together and managed to escape with just minutes to spare. It was a thrilling experience and one that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun and unique activity. Especially due to our guide’s cool and relaxed attitude. He encouraged us to stop and spend as much time as we wanted with the various groups of animals we encountered. He also called around to find the location of the giraffes and when we got to the area he even ran off into the brush to get them to move in our direction so that we could get even better pictures. I wish all guides were so accommodating.

After cycling lazily for over two hours we were ready for the bar, restaurant and pool.

Game Haven Wildlife Ride Fees

There are fees for all aspects and activities at Game Haven Lodge, but they are quite relaxed about the arrangements. Probably because they make large margins on the drinks and food that are a must in such a cool setting. We spent a half-day there and will definitely return for more relaxing outdoor adventures in the future;-)
