Buying a Bike and Gear

As always, I checked the local Gumtree App for a used bike. I found a few options and went for a $90 gravel bike and also visited a house with hundreds of bikes and gear that was all being sent to scrap. I got to cherry pick anything I wanted for free.

I then took the bike to 99 Bikes for a free safety check (they were too busy to do a full tune-up during the summer months).

Then I was off to St Vinies, the Salvation Army Shops, Decathlon, Kmart and BigW for gear. What I couldn’t find I ordered from Amazon.

I was ready within a few days.

Bicycle Transport

Note that bicycles can only be carried on the long-distance regional trains/buses in a box (that is provided at the station). The contents of the box are limited to 20kg. You can pack your bike into the box and deliver it anytime on the day of travel. Generally they will not store the box overnight, but if you ask nicely they may. Alternatively I used a luggage storage service at Sydney Central Station that cost me $44 for the night, while in Tamworth they let me leave the packed bike box overnight before my trip.
