The Tuscany, Florence to Pisa day ride is part of my train-ride-train adventure series. It came about by my discovery that all the regional trains in Italy have bicycle cars or space and that there is no fee for bicycles. Some trains even have bicycle charging stations.
The way this works is that I take my bicycle to the local train station, take a regional train to some place interesting and then set off for a day ride across the beautiful Tuscan countryside. After 75-100 km I stop at the closest train station and take a train back to my starting point.
Crazy concept or not, it has opened all kinds of local riding opportunities for me in Italy (and I guess any country with good bicycle public transport).
On this day’s ride I jumped on an early morning train to Florence (SMN station), rode around the old center, then followed the Arno River downstream towards Pisa.
Total Cost Range of this Activity is: $
The only costs are for public transport to the trailhead and the exit point that you choose.

Rather than staying on the river the entire winding route I did take a more direct route across the Ponte Torto pass and then it was pretty much flatland all the way to Pisa (with a few coffee breaks and a prepared lunch from the local COOP supermarket along the way).
In Pisa I took a detour to visit the old town center and yes, the leaning tower for a few selfies and then I was off to the train station for a train back to my starting point.
An easy, lovely day ride with two historic centers at each end.
