This is a quick post about how to escape to Zanzibar. I provide some details, photos, videos and inspiration. This is a self-guided adventure on a shoestring.
Basically two weeks of fun & sun. We flew in and out of Zanzibar via Dar es Salaam. From the tiny airport it’s an easy taxi ride to/from Stone Town, our main hub for shopping, travel arrangements (private car hire) and eating. Zanzibar’s Stone Town is a-maze-ing. A place lost in time with charm in abundance. Plus a lot of nick-knacks and spices. So much that Cristina must have some. Another excuse to shop.
After getting our fill of food and spices we hooked up with our private driver (arranged by the guesthouse) and headed for the east coast Bwejuu beaches.
This coast has very, very long tides, but that works out for both the locals and us. They make use of the daily shallows and we make use of the golden beaches.
Beyond sunbathing and bathing we tried our hand at bicycling the beach, exploring the local villages and naturally checking out local shops.
It was then time to get a new private driver for a long drive across the island to the northern extreme town of Nungwi where we do more beach walking, eating and a side trip to feed the rescued turtles.
But note that we visited in the rain season so we got a lot of rain but that we were expecting. In spite of the rain, we did get sunshine about one-third of the time and that was better than none.
